Scenario: On the first day of music class, Anael’s teacher asked allof the students to bring in an instrument the next day that either they could play or that they wanted to learn how to play. So, the next day, Anael brought in her violin. With the exception of only 4 other students, nobody else in her class of 30 kids actually brought in an instrument. Nevertheless, the teacher continued on with the day’s lesson plan, and asked all of the students to reflect on how they feel about music in general. Anael reflected on how she thought music is very important because it is a beautiful expression of creativity and emotion through sound. She tended to tell her friends a lot about how much music means to her. She also reflected on her positive memories of playing her violin alongside her mother, while her father played the piano. These were always very serene, lovely times that she spent with her family. The teacher then asked the students to break into pairings, and to show their partner the instrument that they chose to bring, or to talk about the instrument they wanted to learn. As Anael looked around the classroom, she saw that none of the other students who brought an instrument with them were actually playing them for their partner; moreover, most of the pairings were actually just awkwardly sitting silently or talking about something completely different than music. But, Anael knew that if she did choose to play, she actually knew how to play the violin fairly well already, having had a lot of practice with her mother. She did not think it would be very hard for her to play something nice for her partner if she chose to.Questions: With respect to attitudes, what factors would make Anael’s attitude more predictive of her behaviour of playing music for her partner (and briefly state why)? What factors would make Anael’s attitude less likely to predict her behaviour (and briefly state why)? What other constructs in Theory of Planned Behaviour would influence Anael’s likelihood of intending to play her violin, and in which direction would they influence her intention (positively or negatively) and why?
