Dani presents the following high risk behavior as presented in thecase study; at school, she challenges authority, gets in fights with her classmates, gets irritated easily, does not pay attention in class and behaves promiscuously; at home, she is usually in a bad mood, argues and physically threatens her parents, she drinks with her friends while her parents are not home, has inverted sleep cycles and shows no interest for extracurricular activities. Practice skills I would use when working with adolescentslike Dani include being supportive of how she feels and validating her feelings; recognizing what the immediate problem is, in her case, I think she feels abandoned by her parents after her siblings left home, her parents being more present in her life and opening communications channels seems urgent to me; and cultural awareness, Dani is a biracial adolescent who is at the stage of searchingfor her identity based on Erik Erickson developmental stages (Zastrowet al., 2019). I would work under the interpersonal model which proposes “that self-harm is done to manipulate others to avoid abandonment, derive affection or reinforcement, and affirm boundaries” (Silverman et al., 2018). Because of the way Dani describes her relationship with her family, as treatment I would use the MentalizationBased Treatment for Adolescents (MBT-A). This treatment lasts a year and it includes individual and family sessions; the individual learns coping mechanisms for self-control and has the opportunity to open communication channels with the family in a mediated environment that can help them understand each other and see the other’s point of view (Flaherty, 2018). Familial relationships might influence Dani in a negative way because of the opposition in her parents behavior toward hers. Dani states that she can do whatever she wants with her dad and her mom in constantly trying to control her. Because of her parents’ divided front there are no real boundaries and limits are not enforced. Dani states that things were different when her siblings were still at home, this causes resentment between them, specially her sister to whom she is constantly compared to.References:Zastrow, C.
